Tips for Staying Safe While Travelling Alone

  • Research before you travel — know local customs and areas to avoid.

  • Choose accommodation wisely — reputable places with strong reviews from female travellers and 24-hour reception.

  • Share your itinerary with someone you trust and check in regularly.

  • Stay connected — mobile data, emergency numbers, and a charged phone or power bank.

  • Trust your instincts — if something feels wrong, remove yourself from it.

  • Avoid oversharing your real-time location or solo status with strangers.

  • Dress appropriately for local customs to avoid unwanted attention.

  • Secure your valuables — copies of documents, anti-theft bags, low-key jewellery and electronics.

  • Arrive during daylight where possible, to get your bearings safely.

Female Friendly Hotels/Accommodation

Going through the checklist of Female Friendly Hotels/Accommodation. I realise the hotel I have been staying at is female friendly - for the most part. I was tired and jetlagged at check-in but I seem to remember the check-in desk officer asking me to confirm if i was travelling alone and also saying out my room number in front of other guests which they should not do as there is potential to expose the guest to danger. They have all that information in the system because we enter it when we book so they dont really need to ask for it again.

Hotels must fully train their staff to ensure the safety and security of female travellers. What has been your experience, have you stayed at Female Friendly accommodation where the staff were discreet with your details or not.
